Final Assignment (Media Arts Design 1) Artist Statement

Aquarelle is a manifestation of the meaning from my name through watercolour visualization. It was focused on the colours and how it and how it was put together. I decided to use watercolour as my subject as it is my most favourite medium to express myself. Watercolour to me is special as we can manipulated to our own liking to achieve the result that we are looking for. It hits close to home as I too have the ability to adapt to my surrounding and situation. Plus, serene music was chosen with a reason of a biased of myself. I have a temper but I hate making people around me upset so the serene music represented my self control and hopes to the people around me. Overall, I hope with this video the viewer can get a glimpse of my personality and the visions that I see of everyday life.

Final Assignment (Media Arts Design 1) Final Update

Here is my final video. Aquarelle is the name. Aquarelle is the Italian for watercolour.
I have chosen a serene music to compliment my video.

Final Assignment (Media Arts Design 1) Update 2

Now I am going to introduce the marker that I have produced. I used an eye as to symbolizes the window to our soul.  Most of the artwork that I made carries memories and emotions that I experiences during the time.
The marker
Also, I designed the marker to fit the video arrangement according to plan. (Final storyboard)

Final Assignement (Media Arts Design 1) Update 1

After more research (which consist of video watching on both Youtube and Vimeo) I decided to choose the video Tone by Trent Jaklitsch that I found from Vimeo. You can watch the video here.
Screenshot 1

Screenshot 2
I did some research as to plan my video inspired by this particular video.
Research 2
Since I have been using watercolour for most of my works. I decided to capture this essence and record a close up video and compile them in a slightly different way. And thus I made another storyboard from this info.
Final storyboard.
As you can see I will have 4 separate videos compiled like shown in the sketches. The marker will be positioned as shown too, off-centered.

Final Assignment (Media Arts Design 1)

For this assignment we were required to make a video with a theme of our name and identity. This in my opinion is an interesting concept as I am from Malaysia, a country which have multiple races and tradition background.
Research 1
As from the image above, the meaning of my name are fitness and strength. From that I did my research for the colors that represent both of these meanings.
I did my reading here.

Mind map
So I did a mind map as to make me plan and arrangements for further process. So I did several storyboards based solely on what I did here.

Assignment 3 (Media Arts Design 1) Final

After much consideration and opinions seeking from friends and lecturers. I decided to refer to one of my sketches as the final.
The Sketch
From this sketch, I made the final A2 size poster traditionally by using watercolour and oil paint.
Final
Also we were required to make a digital work too.

Artist Statement
Both of this artwork was based on The Juniper Tree by The Grimm Brothers fairy tale. From this fairy tale I learned that we could used our bitter experience as a foundation for the our future. Reflected back to the society today, we are facing the news of teenagers and adults turning to suicide as their last resort to their problems.  As I emphasized the positive vibe by using bright colours and the fire bird emerging from the dark depths below, its a quiet direct visual to deliver this message. Overall, I feel that from this artwork and process I improved myself in skills and emotionally and I hope that the viewers to this artwork would feel the same.

Assignment 3 (Media Arts Design 1) Update 3

And so I have sketched the first draft for this assignment.
Sketch  5 (Draft 1)
Description

Traditional

  1. The title is at the upper right corner accompanied with the songbird.
  2. The poem is written at the center of the piece with stylized calligraphy.
  3. The colour scheme was to combine warm and cool colours as the fairy tale implies the extremes of contrast placing as one of its element.
  4. Execution plan: Medium( A2 size illustration board or printed with craft elements) || Calligraphy( ruling pen or cola pen) || Colours( watercolour and white gouache unless printed).
Digital
  1. By using the same elements, it will be brought into Adobe After Effects for animation.
  2. It will be a 30 seconds animated picture.
  3. I will use the music, Awake in A Dream by Adrion Von Ziegler.
  4. I will overlay with real life footage of food colouring drop as to implies the serene watercolour effect movement.
More on this later. XD

Assignment 3 (Media Arts Design 1) Update 2

I decided to use calligraphy as part of the typography poster based on The Juniper Tree.
But first, I did a sketch as to capture the emotion that I want to centralised in the poster.

Sketch 1
I took the elements of the songbird, juniper tree and blood. I also took the poem as it was very relevant and one of the most important element from the fairy tale. As for the colours, the bird was said to sang so beautifully it made people stop doing their work and gave it things that they wanted to hear it sings again.

As for the calligraphy, this particular pages were used by me to practice using the ruling pen.
Sketch 2

Sketch 3
Also I did some research to have more knowledge about the fairy tale and its elements. Basically, the fairy tale emphasize on the moral of relationship and family. Also, juniper trees most of the time corresponds to the value of life and rejuvenation.
Sketch 4

Assignment 3 (Media Arts Design)

For Assignment 3 we were assigned to make two artworks (traditional and digital) based on a fiction.
I chose a fairy tale from The Grimm Brothers, The Juniper Tree. The reason why I chose this fairy tale is that it is unique and I can relate to the elements and moral of the story.
Attached here are the fairy tale. Feel free to read it :)

Assignment 2 (Media Arts Design 2) Update 3

After choosing keep as the new verb. I made the composition form the initial sketches I made. It was exactly the sketch.

Black and white

Coloured
I took the risk combining the two "e"s as I would it to look like a chest or a safe. But, as I went along and printed the posters most of my friends could not make out the word and instead kept seeing the merged "e"s as "H".
The printed posters

Assignment 2 (Media Arts Design 1) Update 2

I have to break away from building as it started to limit my exploration. So I just randomly sketch verb by verb that came form songs I'm listening to.

And so, I chose keep to be my new verb.

Assigment 2 (Media Art Design 1) Update

Black and white
Coloured
These are the composition I came up with after much thought. I was inspired by the futuristic and grunge theme so I combined them together. Below are my inspiration for the futuristic theme. The color pallete chosen was for the typography to be orange as it gives a futuristic vibe and purplish with grunge texture as to enhance the dark feel plus hints of bright lights.

For the coloured version of the composition, I used quiet a bunch of stock textures. So here, I am going to mention each of them.

Assignment 2 (Media Art Design 1)

Sketches 1
Sketches 2
These are the sketches that I came up with for the typographic poster. From the sketches I managed to figure out the emotions and composition. Also, initially I chose Aristotle Punk typeface and realised it does not show the verb quality. So, I chose Copperplate Gothic Bold as the new typeface.

And this is the composition that I managed to achieve. I decided to come out with a futuristic grungy look afterwards for the color pallete.

3D Modelling Hands-On

This is my first attempt of modelling an object in 3ds Max. I got to admit its tedious but fun, yeah :)
Its an assignment for university, and I still trying to figure my way around the software.
I have chosen to model a headphone (my beloved headphone <3).
Headphone's headpiece and earpiece.
I'm using the 3-year student license from Autodesk. You can get yours here.

Favourite shadows from the cube sculpture

The colour and soft shadows

The dynamic looking

Dynamic and whole

One of the reasons I chose these pictures as my favourites from the rest is that it just capture my attention. Secondly, the shadows are subtle and soft. As I was experimenting with the light, the shadows look like infinity and just intrigued me. Overall, I like how it turns out to be.

Artist Statement

The fonts used for my design was Old English Text MT and Sketchy. I love how elegant the cursive of the alphabet of Old English Text MT and I use the Sketchy typeface to balance it. I put the box and the light source in different angle. I also tied a string and suspended the box in the air and cast lighting on top of it. After the photoshoot, I found out that the most intriguing angle was the bottom. It casts a dynamic like shadow on the screen. Finally, I would suggest putting this box in a personal room where you relax and wants a serene atmosphere. The lighting angle would be best from the bottom as it will casts shadow on the ceiling and the walls. For best effect, use dim lighting.

Day 4

Today, I did my work late as I have to fulfill some promises.
But, I managed to do my work nevertheless.

I set this up for the shadow play.
Before lights on
Lights ON! XD

From mounted light results

This is unprocessed yet. Just want to show it here though :)
I also unmounted the light and put it in different angle. I say the effects are much dynamic and oh-awesome :D

Favourite number 1

Favourite number 2

Needless to say, there's some finishing up I have to do. Then, it'll be the end of Assignment 1 for Media Arts Design 1. More updates later :D
